Mythbusting: Article Submission Sites Do Not Want Duplicate Content by Steve Shaw (c) 2010   |  Published in: Business/ECommerce Judging from the questions I regularly see on this topic, there appears to be some confusion regarding the terms 'duplicate content' and 'duplicate articles'. What is the difference between these two terms? Duplicate Articles: A 'duplicate article' is an article that is submitted to the same publisher twice. No publisher wants to receive duplicate articles. Publishers want authors to submit articles that are fresh. By 'fresh', I mean that the article is completely new to the publisher. No publisher should look at your article and think, "Déjà vu - I feel like I've seen this article before!" You very well may look at a publisher's guidelines and see that they do not accept duplicate articles. That is a normal practice for publishers, and it is not the same as not accepting duplicate content. Duplicate Content: Duplicate content refers to an article being published on multiple pages on the internet. Usually the term 'duplicate content' is associated with how search engines perceive an article that is published on many sites. There is some misunderstanding about how search engines regard duplicate content. Google does not punish a website or an author for having an article published on more than one site. With article marketing, the goal is to have your article republished on many sites, and the whole purpose of article directories is to provide free reprint articles to publishers. So, search engines do not regard it as being a bad thing to have a piece of content published on multiple sites. This does not mean that they want to list every instance of the article on the internet in the search results. A search engine will likely show only a few instances of an article on different sites in search results, meaning searches done by your target readers for keyword terms associated with your article. (Of course if you do a Google search for your article title putting quotes around the title, you will be able to see a list of the places where your article is appearing.) Are Most Online Publishers Opposed to Duplicate Content? No, they are not - article directories in particular are not usually opposed to receiving articles that are published elsewhere, provided that you are the exclusive copyright holder of the article. Article submission sites want you to submit content that belongs to you and that you have not previously submitted to that same site before. Why are Most Article Directories Okay with Duplicate Content? The whole purpose of an article directory is to provide free reprint articles for website owners and ezine editors. When an article is published on a directory, the goal is that the article be republished on other websites. Most article directories will not require or expect that they will be the only site on the internet that contains your article. The very nature and purpose of an article directory goes against that expectation. This is not to say that there are not a few directories that prefer to be the first website to publish your content. You can check the editorial guidelines at the article submission site to see if the site has such a rule. As I mentioned, most online publishers are fine with accepting your articles that have already been published on other websites. (Remember, these are articles of which you are the exclusive copyright holder). If you have the impression that a directory does not accept articles published elsewhere, then double check that you are not confusing 'duplicate content' with 'duplicate articles.' How To Measure Your Article Marketing Success by Steve Shaw (c) 2010   |  Published in: Business/ECommerce When you are trying to measure your article marketing success, it is sometimes hard to know which indicators really matter and which don't. Should you be looking at how many sites pick up your articles (how many links are being built), the clicks that your resource box generates, your article views, all of the above, or none of the above? I don't blame you for being confused. Rest assured that measuring your success is pretty scientific and does not involve any guesswork. Here are the ones you need to measure: 1 - Traffic to your website 2 - The number of backlinks to your website 3 - Your website's search engine ranking for your keyword terms 4 - Google PageRank of your site Measure all of these one time per month. Just pick a date, and put it on your calendar to document these stats in a spreadsheet that you create. Looking at all of these statistics will give you a much better idea of how your article submission campaign is progressing. You can start measuring these stats from the onset of your article marketing campaign, but keep in mind that you won't see results right away. It usually takes several months for Google to register newly created backlinks, so the first few months you will just be establishing a baseline. Probably anywhere from the third to sixth month you will start to see improvements in some of your stats. Which Changes Will You See First? Here is the process: Links are built, then Google adjusts PageRank and search engine ranking. When your website moves up higher in the rankings, then you will start to receive more traffic to your site. You can also see an increase in traffic to your website through people clicking the link in your resource box, but that traffic is minimal compared to what you are looking for from the search engines. The major benefit of article marketing is search engine traffic. Keep in mind, all of this information fluctuates -- that is why it is a good idea to record these stats on a monthly basis. If you are just looking at one thing, such as number of backlinks, you can get discouraged very quickly if it is taking Google awhile to calculate your new links. The same with the other stats -- if you focus too closely on any one of them, you may get the idea that you are not making any progress when really you are. Some months you may take two steps forward in one or more of these areas, and during the same month you may take two steps back in other areas. Looking at a variety of stats helps keep you balanced. Also, remember that article marketing is a long term marketing tool, so you need to submit articles consistently each and every month, even after you start to see results and even after you reach your goal of a #1 ranking for your keyword term. Search engine optimization is a very competitive business, but if you are using article submissions, the work is quite doable for the average person. The key to success is consistency -- submit quality articles consistently each month and develop a consistent way of measuring your progress. Let them know what's ahead of them and what they'll get by reading the article or news release. Desire - increase the reader's desire by stating the benefits. Be able to answer this question "What's In It for me?" Action - at the end of every article, don't forget to place a "Byline" or "Resource Box" that states who you are and what your company or business provides. Remember also to put a link to your site. Keyword-Optimize Your Links and Articles All the content or articles you've written must contain keyword-optimized anchor text links that point to your business website. So it's better to spice up your articles with keywords related to the product or service you're selling. At the bottom of the resource box, also put a keyword-optimized anchor text link directed to your site. Link anchor text coming from authority sites is very much necessary in search engine optimization. This is the word or phrase that appears within the clickable hyperlink to another site. Article Marketing Myths and Facts by John Tucker (c) 2010   |  Published in: Business/ECommerce By now everyone has heard of article marketing but so many people define it in so many different ways that it has become hard for people new to article marketing to understand. First of all, most of the SEO Gurus caught on to article marketing late in the game, then scrambled to create their own definitions of it at the last minute so it didn't appear they were ever not aware of the power of article marketing. In general, article marketing is where you write an article on a topic that is related to your website topic. Not a promotional article for your website, but an article about something that is informative to the reader. In the article you use keywords and phrases that relate to your topic as well, much like you would optimize a webpage. Your article when reprinted will be the text of a webpage or webpages. In the author bio section at the bottom is some info about you and links to your website. It is suggested that you put in one link to your main page and one to an interior page that fits the article you are writing. If your article is submitted to websites that take article submissions and that offer free content to webmasters, then webmasters can choose to repost your article on their websites, and the links in the author bio section become links from their websites to your website. Now lets go on to the myths and facts about article marketing. MYTH: Article marketing doesn't really help you all that much. FACT: Article Marketing can help you improve your link popularity and be a source of some of the most targeted traffic you can get. MYTH: Reprinted Articles only get indexed as supplemental pages, therefore it doesn't help enough to make it worthwhile. FACT: Depending on where the article gets submitted to, the article itself can get a top 10 listing in major search engines and not as a supplemental page. MYTH: Submitting your article everywhere creates duplicate content and the search engines will punish or discount those pages as a result. FACT: If search engines punished duplicate content in the way that myth suggests, then all RSS feeds that cause a post in a blog to be reproduced or published would be discounted and they are not. The New York Times articles and CNN stuff is blasted all over the web and are not punished or discounted. Duplicate content is two webpages that are around 70% similar, not two webpages that have similar text on them. MYTH: The only way article marketing works is if you write an article and then submit it to thousands of article submission websites. FACT: There is more than one way to make article marketing work for you. The way mentioned above works okay if you are looking to get a lot of links back to your website whether they are related or not and can be effective if you currently have very little or no link popularity at all. Another way is to hand submit your article to article submission websites that only accept articles related to your topic. This is more difficult, but the links help you more just through the submissions and it's more likely that the websites that pick up and repost your article will be also related to your topic which can help you with better links and targeted traffic.
